Disable global updating
namely the address format (ex: Building: Business, Office: BS123, Campus: IUPUI gets changed to BS123, BUS, IN). What we want now is a way to disable this automatic update.
Microsoft has a way to do it by a group policy change. At first I thought that, perhaps, going to the "view" tab, then people pane and selecting prompt before updating or never, would fix the issue... My guess is that since the People Pane links you to social networking, that those updates apply to those contacts?
When your computer doesn't report back as having the most recent version of the software, an Admin's head will tilt to the side slightly - and he's going to investigate the reason.
It is MUCH easier to override specific GPO objects you don't like, such as your home page being set in chrome (which could also be part of the way the software is deployed as much as a GPO object, as GPO generally only applies to M$ products).
Your "hacks" will continue to be overridden by Group Policy.
Even changing the update interval should revert back to its previous setting on boot.
While it may be tempting to turn off updating, it defeats one purpose of the social connector: to keep your contacts updated.
The change log in the notes field displays the changed data, should it try to update the contact with old information. The key is the same for all versions of Outlook that support the Social Connector. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Social Connector DWORD: Run Automatic GALSync Possible Values: 0 (Never Sync) 1 (Update without Prompt) 2 (Prompt to sync) Default setting is Update without Prompting.
The home page being set static is usually both a security mandate, as well as a user support fix.
After completing this tutorial you will have configured Microsoft Outlook to always reference the latest version of the global address book directly from the email server rather than referencing a downloaded local copy. After following these steps, you will only be able to access the global address book while Outlook is connected to the server.
While in Offline mode you will have to enter the full email address for any recipient that isn't saved in your contacts list.
As a result, the local contacts information will be overwritten by the contact information contained within the GAL.
Some of my contacts are in both the GAL and my local Contacts folder. This is a feature of the Social Connector, with the automatic updates of contacts enabled by default.
